Irrigation is an alternative wax removal procedure available to patients who are comfortable with it. Safer and more straightforward than syringing, an irrigation solution is warmed to body temperature before a controlled flow is gently streamed into the ear. A member of our expert audiology team will pull the external ear up and back before tilting the nozzle of the sprayer to allow a pressurised flow of water run along the roof of the ear canal, before flushing wax and debris out of its floor. Although the sensation may feel a little strange at first, the method is quick and pain-free, usually taking approximately 30 minutes per ear. It may need to be repeated a couple of times before being dried thoroughly to ensure all wax is removed successfully.
