Hearing Aid Care Tips for the Summer

Hearing Aid Care Tips for the Summer

Like any sophisticated devices, it's crucial to protect your hearing aids from heat, humidity, and water. These elements can harm the microphone, receiver, and circuit, affecting their performance. But don't worry! Here are six care tips to help you keep your hearing aids safe and performing their best during the warmer months ahead:

Protect hearing aids from water damage:

While swimming and boating are delightful summer activities, remember that even water-resistant hearing aids can be affected by water contact. Therefore, it's best to remove your hearing aids and store them safely whenever your ears might get wet. Remember to dry your ears, including the ear canals, before reinserting your hearing aids after water activities.

Store in a cool dry place

Whether you're taking a swim or relaxing in the sun, keeping your hearing aids in a cool environment helps prevent damage caused by heat or humidity. Avoid storing them in the car or any damp or sunlit areas. Instead, place them in their case and store them in a cooler, shaded location.

Use a dry-aid kit/dehumidifier

Frequent transitions between air-conditioned and outdoor environments can lead to humidity build-up and affect hearing aid performance. Combat this by using a dry-aid kit or dehumidifier specifically designed for hearing aids. They are affordable, easy to use, and your hearing care professional can assist you in finding the right one for your devices.

Apply skin protectants before wearing hearing aids

While sunscreen and insect repellent are essential for protection, they can clog your hearing aid's microphone or receiver. To avoid this, apply your lotions or sprays, wash your hands, and then insert your hearing aids. Before placing them in their charger or case at bedtime, simply wipe them clean.

Remove hearing aids before thrilling rides

Amusement park season calls for exciting rides, but sudden movements can cause your hearing aids to fall out. Safely remove and stow them away before hopping on any thrill ride to ensure they stay secure throughout the adventure.

Choose the right footwear

Believe it or not, the right footwear can contribute to hearing aid care. Wearing well-fitting shoes suitable for your summer activities reduces the chances of tripping and dropping your hearing aids.
