Hearing Aids, What You Can Expect in the Early Days

Getting used to wearing hearing aids

After a very short time, new hearing aid users say they could not imagine life without them. The immediate improvement to their lifestyles and their increased enjoyment of their social life is immense. Being able to re-engage with the people you love and the sounds around you once again makes a difference. For some though, hearing aids takes some getting used to, suddenly being able to hear what people are saying in a crowded restaurant or from across the room can be a shock. It can be a shock for people to suddenly realise that the world is a noisy place because over the years they have forgotten.

Slowly Introduce Yourself

If at first hearing aids seem somewhat overwhelming, you can introduce yourself slowly to them. Wear the hearing aids for a few hours a day at home first. During the first week, increase the length of time that you are wearing them. Eventually over a two week period work yourself up to wearing them all of the time from the time you get out of bed to the time you get back in. .

Hearing Aids In Noisy Situation

When you first go into a noisy situation with hearing aids it can be a shock. You are immersed in sound, sound that may have been dulled previously by your hearing loss. At the beginning it can be complete sensory overload. However, you will quickly adapt to the new level of sound, not just that, you will be surprised how much easier it is for you to hear the people you are talking to. The key to it is to stick with them, you will acclimatise to all of the new sounds.

Not just that, you will be amazed as your understanding of speech continues to get better as your brain becomes used to your hearing aids and your new level of hearing. Over a short period of time, new, will become norm, we pay particular attention to Patient aftercare, it is important  to us that you are getting on well in the early stages. We also take care to go through daily maintenance and troubleshooting at the beginning. The last thing that we want at the early stages is your confidence being knocked by a simple problem. Or even worse, your progress delayed by an easily fixable issue.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

Keeping hearing aids in top condition and at peak performance is really important but relatively easy. Our audiologists in our hearing aid centres in Cork, Waterford, Kilkenny & Tralee are always available if you need help. Here is a simple checklist for your peace of mind:

  • -Simple maintenance involves little more than external cleaning of the aids themselves. Changing your wax guards  and checking your domes.or moulds
  • -Wax guards and domes do need to be renewed regularly.. We will always show you how.
  • -Make sure you always have at least two weeks supply of batteries. Each battery cell lasts about 7 days (this does  vary though across different models)..
  • -We offer and honour a manufacturer's warranty, but we do recommend you see us at the very least once a year to  check and service your hearing aids
  • -Our aftercare is free for as long as you have the hearing aids
  • -It does help if you have the details of your hearing aids readily to hand to ensure you order the right size batteries,  guards and domes. That really is all you need to know.

As always, if you have any questions about hearing loss or hearing aids, call us on 1800 501 501, we are always happy to talk to you
